Ramona Maharaj from the City of Hamilton - How to Become an ESL Teacher Abroad

Ramona Maharaj left the City of Hamilton so that she could travel the world and work as a teacher. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English at a university in Toronto, Canada and then moved to Korea to begin teaching. She has taught in more than half a dozen countries. She loved learning about new cultures and meeting new people. If you are interested in becoming an ESL teacher and working abroad, there are a few steps that you can take to make that happen.

The first step is to earn an undergraduate degree. It could be helpful to earn a degree in English, education, or another related field. You will need an undergraduate degree in order to earn a TEFL certification and begin teaching abroad. While you are still studying, it might be a good idea to start considering where you want to teach. It could be helpful to learn a little about that culture before you move.

The next step is to earn your certification. You can enroll in a program and take courses on teaching English as a second language. These programs may also prepare you for the exam you have to take in order to become certified. During this stage, you will gain theoretical knowledge as well as practical experience.

The final step is to get ready to move. This could involve starting to learn the language of the country you will be working in, and getting the logistics taken care of. Ramona Maharaj grew up in the City of Hamilton and has taught English all over the world.
